Arla Plast : "1 month - 1 member"

This month “1 month – 1 member” will focus on Arla Plast and its SAPHIR® coated abrasion resistant polycarbonate sheets used for automotive glazing.

The strongest value of Arla Plast is to select the highest quality raw materials depending on the intended application, enabling to deliver exactly the quality level that will suit the demands the best.

SAPHIR® is the name of coated polycarbonate sheets from Arla Plast. In order to achieve maximum scratch resistance or to allow certain flexibility for drape forming, Arla Plast has prepared several versions of SAPHIR® products. Indeed SAPHIR® products are divided in three main application areas: General purpose, Security and Lamination.

Regarding the General purpose application, SAPHIR® offers full view during operation of an industrial machine. At the same time the operator is protected from being injured. Other applications offer protection against impact, wind and noise.

SAPHIR® is also used for Security purposes as it is an easy way to protect windows from being smashed. This is useful in environments where theft or vandalism is a problem. Crowd separation glazing with clear view is an example of sport arena applications.

As for Lamination, SAPHIR® is used in BRG – Bullet Resistant Glazing - where glass layers are laminated together with polycarbonate. Here, a combination of optical clarity, optical distortion level and sheet elasticity properties are important.

Key Figures

  • SAPHIR® is Arla Plast’s most popular coated product suitable for applications with special dioptric demands.

  • SAPHIR® is homologated to ECE R43 safety glazing on vehicles, and some types also to ECE R118 for use in buses and vehicles with more than eight seats.

  • For applications only needing a scratch resistant surface without high optical demands, Arla Plast offers MAKROCLEAR™ HARDCOAT.
